Subject: To the Kinkele family and friends...by Ted Essenfeld 8/17/00

It was my priveledge to know and serve with Scott Kinkele. He was a good man

and will always be remembered. Whether he was helping a shipmate with a

problem in class or joking about the goings on in the ready room, Scott was

always a presence. He never failed to smile and treat everyone as an equal.

He was a professional who exemplified the qualities of a naval officer. But

more importantly, he was a sound example of a kind and decent human being. I

wish there were more like him. His loss is a great tragedy for us all. I can

offer no words strong enough to console you, his family. All I can say is

that you brought Scott into the world and helped to create the wonderful

soul he was. You should be very proud. Though his loss is tragic, and came

too soon, the world is a better place for his presence. Scott touched the

lives of many, if only briefly for a few of us. But his loss is felt by us

all. I will always imagine Scott at the peak of some high mountain, looking

out thoughtfully, smiling, and wishing he could share the view. Think of him

this way and find comfort in his joy. He is where he always wanted to be...

among the highest peeks, peering through the clouds, touching heaven.

A group of us were on our way to Arlington from Jacksonville when our plane

experienced a problem. We were forced to return to NAS Jax and were left

with no time for an alternative way to travel. I am so very sorry that we

could not be there with you to honor Scott and mourn his passing with those

who loved and knew him best. My thoughts are with you and with Scott. I hope

you find the peace that eludes us all after such a tragic loss. I'm sure it

will come in time. Until then, be well, and rest easy with the knowledge

that Scott was a good man and his time on this earth will always be

remembered.

Fair winds and Following seas, Scott. You can rest your oars, sailor.

With respect,

ENS Ted Essenfeld, USNR
