Running with Scott
reported by Mike Riggs on 8/02/00

What a sensless tragedy. Scott and I ran a few marathons together. He finished hours ahead of me but we were on the same course so that counts in my book.

I did the Rocky Racoon 100 miler (see Rick's Rocky race report) and he worked an aid station. I didn't show up at an aid station when my wife was expecting me and he ran the course to find me. He did 10-15 miles at 6:00am in the morning after staying up until all night just to ease her mind. He found me, offered to carry my extra clothes, since the weather had been quite cold in the night, and escorted me back to civilization and a much relieved wife. He also made me a laser engraved rolling pin (for massaging sore muscles) for me to remember the accomplishment. Small things, but just an example of the life he lived.

No one deserves this fate but this is particularly heartbreaking for such a great guy. The world is a lesser place without him but I know I'll feel his spirit out on the trail.

Run on, Scott. We'll miss you.

Mike
