My Thoughts and Prayers are with you
reported by Kim Sergeant on 8/04/00

I am a MAMA runner living in Galveston Texas and wanted to send you my
condolences and to have you know that Scott and all of you are in my
thoughts and prayers.

I met Scott last year during the MAMA series. I am a 100 miler runner,
having completed 13 100's to date. I didn't know who Scott was at first,
only that he was fast (I am slow). I got to know Scott more as the summer
series progressed and I saw him at the Texas races later in the season.

I remember well during the Rocky Racoon 100 mile race in February, coming in
to the 174 aid station and Scott was there taking pictures and helping
everyone. It was a miserable day for crewing. I heard later that he paced
another woman runner from Massachusetts - it was her first 100 mile race. I
know from my own experience that Ruth and Scott must have bonded in a way
that few others do in that time they were on the trail. I'll never forget
my first pacer and the experience. Since then, Ruth has run extremely well
and I am certain that Scott's generosity of time and extreme talent will
never be forgotten by her.

I had the chance at the Hog's Hunt race in April to talk to Scott at length
and was "wowed" by the talent of this young man (I can say that, because I
am 42). I had no idea that he was a Naval academy grad and nor of all that
he had accomplished at such a young age. I knew, talking to him then, that
he was a very special, talented and giving individual.

I am leaving work now to put my nightly miles in and I will run for Scott.
MAMA will have a run on August 19th, which I know, all of us will run with
and for Scott. You see, I believe that the trails in heaven are waiting for
us all.

I have the rolling pin that Scott designed for rubbing muscles. If you
don't have one and would like to have one as a keep sake, please let me know
and I will send you mine. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with you and
your entire family.
